How to Earn Extra Money Writing for Weekend Notes

Update 2024: Weekend Notes is still running and accepting new writers, but there's a new platform for uploading articles called Toopa.

To apply, visit https://www.weekendnotes.com/australia/write-for-us/

You can also visit the Toopa FAQ page at: https://toopa.com/faq/

Advertising revenue goes into a monthly pool and is divided up amongst writers (minimum payout is still $50)

Weekend Notes is a website that allows people to submit reviews and articles about local events, places, activities, books and films.

I've been writing articles for Weekend Notes for a while and, while I don't commit as much time to writing as others on the site do, I've still managed to earn a little bit of extra cash from it.

You can earn money via a couple of methods:
  • Article views
  • Comments
  • Links (eg. when you contact a business and they link to your article from their website)
  • Awards (there are a number of different awards available to writers)
  • Referring new writers to the site via their scout program
The majority of my earning have come from article views and awards.

As with anything, the more time you commit, the more you'll earn, but here are some of the tips I'd give to someone considering joining:

⭑ Have a read through the Writer's FAQ
The Writer's FAQ is listed here: https://www.weekendnotes.com/writer-faq/

This section has all the info you'll need on writing articles, competitions, awards etc

⭑ Lists can be good earners
The articles that I have earned the most from have been lists e.g.
  • Top 5 Gluten Free Restaurants in [Name of city],
  • Top 7 Free Activities for Kids in [Name of Town]
I'd recommend including a couple of 'List' articles to see how they go, as they may be more lucrative than single place articles.

⭑ Write a couple of Book Reviews
I really enjoy writing book reviews, and have noticed that they tend to earn more than my articles about events or places.  Often I'll see a spike in views when it's first publishes, and then it will slow down, but overall, they seem to be more popular compared to my other articles.

⭑ Check if any cities near you have a CPM Multiplier.
Some cities will earn you more per view for example, an article for Geelong will currently earn 2.88 times the amount an article for Melbourne will (more information is available here)

⭑ Steadily build up a good number of articles and then assess
My first couple of articles didn't earn much and I relied on awards to get to the $50 threshold, but as I built up my collection of articles over time it became easier to get to $50 (The first $50 is always the hardest!)

Try to write a number of articles, and then see if it's worth your time.  From the site:
"When starting out try to publish at least 30 articles and then wait a couple of months before deciding if you are making enough per article to justify your time."

⭑ Make sure you write at least one article per year
If it's been more than 12 months since you last published an article, then your account will become inactive, and will no longer earn money (it can be re-activated by publishing another article, but you'll miss out on any money your account would have earned in the mean time).

⭑ Make sure your phone is charged and carry it everywhere
If you're driving somewhere new and pass a landmark or playground, jump out, have a look around and take some photos.  It doesn't take long, and provides you with the basis of a new article.

⭑ If you take your own photos for articles, consider whether you'll want to republish your photos elsewhere online
If you want to republish them and maintain copyright, make sure you select '0' for original photos in the paid writer options.

⭑ Payment
Payment threshold is $50 and requesting your payment is easy!
If you reach $50 or more by the end of the month, an account will be created for you.  Check you've filled in your bank account or Paypal details, and select 'submit' to submit your account for payment.

Note: Payments are received approximately one month later.
For example, if you reach $50 by the end of June, you can submit your invoice at the beginning of July, and you'll receive your money at the beginning of August.

I have previously received my payments straight into my bank account without any problems.

Apart from that, I'd suggest familiarising yourself with the FAQ and then go from there.
